As the season tips into the New Year,
we navigate the narrow road, lifting, uncurling under bright blue sky. The Farallon Islands leap from the horizon, then disappear as we round the next hill. First stop—boisterous north shore. We slip down the embankment, engulfed in blinding light that sparks off crashing waves. Spray pelts us, cold wind slaps our cheeks. Racing tide chases us back up the dunes. Five miles on, at Drake’s Beach, tranquil tide ripples in. Elephant seals wallow and grunt in warm, soft sand. Children build a driftwood fort in the curved arms of the bay-- what was once a sanctuary for battered ships and old sea dogs. |
