Maples are too delicate for fire.
Birches turn to spent matchsticks. Oaks just give it up and topple, counting, maybe rightly, on their acorns. Hydrangeas go the way of the butterfly bush and disappear without a trace, no smudge left on the grey-black surface. And ferns? Azaleas? Fat-flowered rhodies? That’s what picture books are for. But the redwoods, now a century old, stand straight as ever, marked by their first scorching, teenagers with new tattoos emulating the scarified ancients. A moonscape, with redwoods. |
