I.
The assault on the US Capitol was just business as usual, Unusually held in public, bursting out of board rooms, back rooms, man caves, video screens and shooting ranges. A hangman’s noose and wooden crosses gave meaning and intent to an enthusiastic white christian nationalist display, an alternate reality of bad losers, race haters, forgotten workers, fear-mongers and rapture seekers. Patriots of the Big Lie spewed by the Pompous Pompadour, Knowing only a coup can immobilize history, unaware the future is being sculpted without them by experts of lived experience who peacefully entered thirty State Capitols two summers ago on each hot Monday for six weeks. II.
We don’t need spies to know the way around the building, Our’s have been there too many times for too many grieves, Times as they are, needing our help for justice to carry, This time profit and power doesn’t get the podium, This time on housing, the unhoused This time on medical care, patients and nurses This time on immigration, refugees On poverty, the poor; on racism, people of color On climate, youth; on prisons, ex-cons. The misery of money for missiles, but low wages, empty cupboards for the 140 million who go from day to next uncertain day. Time then to leave the steps and enter the halls of our trial, By the hundreds in thirty States, we march in singing our song: Somebody’s hurting our people, It’s gone on far too long, And we won’t be silent anymore. Signs and spirts held high, our music shakes the rotunda, Bouncing our desire into almost unendurable complexity, Intermingling joy, courage, solidarity. Filling our bodies with hope and determination to challenge power. Nine tons of granite Columbus trembles from our voices, The Miwok among us cover the explorer with a teepee shroud. We move on to nestle at the paws of the Golden Bear that guards the Governor’s office. The back door exit his usual solution. Our David sits again for his 154th arrest in the service of his call: Peace, tolerance, equity, justice, equality and love. |
